Ways to be in the Moment

Ways to be in the Moment - Episode 105

Over the last few years there has been a big push to live in the moment. While this is not a new concept by any means, people have been saying and practicing it for thousands of years, it has really started to catch on recently with the whole mindfulness movement. There are so many benefits to being in the moment but it can be difficult to do. We tend to think ahead to the future, or reminisce (good and bad) about the past. Yes plan for the future and learn from the past but live in the moment! And that’s what I discuss in today’s episode of the Jonesin’ for show.

How can you live in the moment? If you feel stressed or anxious it’s because you’re living in the future and you’re trying to will the future to do what you want. That’s not how it works, you can only control your present moment. Focus on what you can control. You need to be flexible and understanding and learn and grow when things don’t go your way. You may also be stuck in the past, suffering from guilt or regrets. The things in the past have already happened of course, you can’t change it, but you can learn and grow from them. If you want to be truly happy and live yourself to the max, you need to live in the present moment. You should look ahead at times to set goals, but in order to reach those goals you need to live in the present moment which allows you to do what you need to do to accomplish them. There are thousands of ways that you can be in this very moment. You need to find the ones that work for you. I want to share with you a few of the ways that work for me.

The first thing that I do is to breathe. When I start feeling stressed or annoyed, I focus on my breathing. It helps to calm you down and lower your heart rate plus it helps you to live in the moment. I also like to go for a walk. You can walk anywhere, around the house, in the yard, on the sidewalk/street, it doesn’t matter. On these walks I start by focusing on my breath and then I look around and focus on the beauty of my surroundings. Then I listen to all of the sounds. Are there animals? Are there people talking? What do you hear? Don’t judge anyone or anything, don’t get attached to anything you see, just notice them, and appreciate them. Lastly, I focus on how my body is moving. How does my foot feel when it hits the ground? What is the sensation as the wind wisps across my face? I open my awareness to the present moment.

These aren’t the only things you can do, think about maybe three ways that bring you into the moment. When I eat, I focus on the food and enjoy each bite. I give thanks for the ability to have that food. I do the same things when I’m drinking my coffee or even just water. You could listen to music, maybe that will bring you into the present moment. Once you start focusing on being in the present moment your world shifts. You remove the stress and anxiety from your life and let love in. Enjoy the present moment so that you can be at your best. Take the next five minutes to just listen and look at the things around you. Look for the beautiful things and be in the moment.
