Sustained Success

Sustained Success - Episode 101

What does sustained success look like to you? What does it mean to you? For me, sustained success means I consistently have wins. The wins don’t have to be huge; they just have to come over and over again. Of course, you can’t always be at the peak. Life is full of ups and downs, once you reach a peak you need to go back down before you can reach the next peak. When you’re going up a mountain there isn’t just a straight path to the top that you need to climb. There are multiple little peaks and valleys on the way up, sustained success is about reaching the top of all of the peaks along the way to the ultimate goal. It means that you are learning and growing and having incredible experiences, you are living your life to the max. Now how can you get there more often? I have four different ways that can help you have sustained success!

The first thing you can do to have sustained success is have a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset means you are flexible and willing to admit when you’re wrong. When obstacles come up you learn, you grow, and you move on. If you’re moving along on this mountain and you hit an obstacle you can learn, grow, and keep trekking up that mountain.

The second strategy is to see things as opportunities. Instead of seeing obstacles as problems and things you just need to get passed, see them as opportunities to grow and become a better person. Whenever a problem arises you will find different options for things to do and you can keep moving on. For example, I was trying to take some of my choir students on a trip and we were planning on taking a bus. The bus cancelled on us, but instead of giving up and saying that we couldn’t go on the trip I started looking for other options. First, I tried to take a van, but the school wouldn’t allow that. I tried multiple avenues only be find out it would work. Finally I looked to see if flights were an option. It turned out catching a flight would work perfectly! That obstacle of the bus cancelling allowed me to have the opportunity of flying with my students, for some it was their first plane ride and I got to share it with them.

My next tip is to surround yourself with the right people. The people you surround yourself with affects your life. They can help you achieve those wins, and they can give you the mental strength to keep chasing them. When I’m feeling upset, I turn to the people in my tribe, and they give me ideas for what opportunities can come out of it or for how to just move past it. If you surround yourself with negative people, they can’t help you to be positive. Surround yourself with the right people.

The last strategy is to keep going after big goals! For example, maybe your goal is to have a clean room. That’s cool, but I want you to go after the whole house! Having a clean room can be a step along the way to that big goal. Set a big goal and break it down into smaller pieces that you can achieve. That will allow you to have sustained success as you keep accomplishing those small goals on the way to the big one.
